Engagements that left a record
Farid Hashim
Operations Director, Petaling Jaya
"We used the Tools Selection Advisory when choosing a project management platform. I had been putting the decision off because I did not want to run the process myself. The written recommendation was specific and the reservations section was the most useful part — it flagged exactly what we later found out in the first two months of using the tool."
Tools Selection Advisory — April 2025
Nurul Nazurah
CEO, KL-based logistics firm
"The monthly strategic notes have been running for seven months now. The topics vary considerably — some months it is a competitor's reported expansion, other months it is something about supply chain conditions in the region. What I appreciate is that the notes are short and do not try to be comprehensive. They are genuinely useful for the executive team briefings."
Strategic Note Series — ongoing since October 2024
Tan Li Wei
Head of Strategy, Shah Alam
"We commissioned the Stakeholder Alignment Memo before a significant internal restructuring decision. The interviews were thorough and the memo was clear about where the divergences were. The one thing I would note is that the process works best when the sponsor is genuinely open to hearing positions that contradict their own — which ours was. The output was exactly what we needed going into that meeting."
Stakeholder Alignment Memo — March 2025
Azwan Mustafa
Finance Director, Selangor
"The fixed pricing was one of the main reasons we approached Saro Bay. Our previous advisory arrangements always ended with a higher invoice than expected. The scope brief made clear what was included and the final invoice matched it exactly. The tools recommendation itself was sound — we implemented it and have had no regrets about the choice."
Tools Selection Advisory — February 2025
Sharmila Rajan
Managing Partner, KL consulting firm
"The Stakeholder Alignment Memo is a format I had not seen before. We had used surveys and team workshops but neither gave us the candor that the confidential interview format produced. The anonymization worked well — people spoke more directly to the advisor than they would have in any group setting. Useful output for a difficult decision."
Stakeholder Alignment Memo — January 2025
Halim Yusof
COO, manufacturing company, Klang
"Three months into the Strategic Note Series. The notes have become part of how we prepare for our monthly senior team meeting. My only observation is that the topics I have been choosing are probably more operationally specific than the format is designed for, and the advisor has been honest about the limits of what can be covered in three to five pages. That kind of directness is useful."
Strategic Note Series — ongoing since March 2025
Case Studies
How the engagements worked in practice
Case Study 01 — Tools Selection
Choosing a CRM platform for a regional distribution business
Challenge
A mid-size distribution company in Selangor had been evaluating three CRM platforms for six months without reaching a decision. Internal disagreement about requirements and competing vendor claims had stalled the process.
Process
Saro Bay ran requirements sessions with the sales team, the customer service function, and the finance director. Structured trials were conducted against the agreed criteria. The three vendor claims were tested against actual workflows rather than demo environments.
Outcome
Written recommendation delivered in eighteen days. The company implemented the recommended platform within the following quarter. The reservations section identified a data migration limitation that the team addressed before implementation.
"The structured process gave us something internal debate could not: a neutral party who had actually used the tools in our specific context." — Operations lead
Case Study 02 — Stakeholder Memo
Mapping positions before a board-level restructuring decision
Challenge
A professional services firm in Kuala Lumpur was approaching a structural decision about its partnership model. The managing partner suspected that positions across the partner group were more divergent than weekly meetings had indicated.
Process
Seven partners were interviewed over three days. The central question was framed clearly in advance. Interviews followed a structured format with open sections. The memo anonymized all attributable content and organized positions into convergence and divergence themes.
Outcome
The memo revealed three clear convergence points and two substantive divergences not previously visible. The managing partner used the document to restructure the agenda for the decision meeting. The decision was reached in one session rather than the anticipated three.
"We knew the room wasn't aligned. We didn't know on what, specifically, or why. The memo answered both questions." — Managing partner
Case Study 03 — Strategic Note Series
Monthly notes for a regional retail executive team
Challenge
The CEO of a multi-site retail business wanted a regular written input for monthly executive meetings but had no internal resource to produce it. External reports from industry bodies were too generic to be actionable.
Process
Topics are set by the CEO each month based on what is most pressing. The advisor researches, drafts, and delivers the note within ten working days. Notes have covered regulatory changes, competitor positioning, and supplier market conditions, among other topics.
Outcome
Twelve months of notes delivered. The CEO has described the notes as having replaced two hours of meeting preparation per month. Three notes have been distributed beyond the executive team to the board.
"Short, specific, and written for someone with limited time. That's a harder format to produce than it sounds." — CEO
